The 14th Annual Youth Summer Camp 2015

Ten lucky Music Project students' were sponsored to participate in "The 14th Annual Youth Summer Camp 2015". The Organiser / Director Joy Ferdinando of "the International Institute of Music, Dance & Speech" invited the Music Project to participate and sponsored the course fees & accommodation for five students from Kurunegala and five students from Mulliativu. The Music Project is so grateful to Ms. Joy Ferdinando for her kind generosity in providing our students this fabulous opportunity.

The balance funding of transport, meals and accommodation was sponsored by eleven kind individuals who wished to provide the children with an unique experience.
This program was held from 16th - 21st April 2015 at the Lions Club Colombo 7, a six day programme conducted by three International specialists - Steve Dummer from UK - Music, Timothy McCarthy of Ireland - Speech & Drama, and Carolyn Savidge & Jessamine Landamore of UK - Dance. The children were accompanied by the Music Project teachers Lahiru Senarath and Kasun Jayasinghe, who assisted Steve Dummer with the practice sessions.
This program consisted of team building activities, warm up exercises, improvisation of music, vocal exercises, learning of new orchestral pieces: country dance - Beethoven & Bulgar from Odessa - Trad, Minuet - Mozart, Galliard - J. Staden & Allegro -Haydn, orchestral practices and lots of fun group activities, where they got an opportunity to mingle with various students from different art disciplines.
The last day consisted of a fabulous performances of music, speech & drama and dance at the Bishop College Auditorium on the 21st April. The concert was an unique experience where you were absolutely captivated totally by the impact of the repertoires, narratives and the talent of the students. Where no trimmings distracted you away from the main element.
The program has been an amazing learning journey for the children. Being part of a group with varied disciplines, being part of an orchestra, learning how to play an accompanying role to all the performances at the concert are some of the main experiences. It has exposed them to the professional world of music and also given them an opportunity to shine as individuals.

We would like to thank the following individuals for their generous contributions towards sponsoring the children of The Music Project to participate in "The 14th Annual Summer Youth Camp 2015" - Joy Ferdinando, Chandan de Silva, Anushia Tennakoon, Sharmela de Silva, Shanthi Aranze, Aruni John, Dinusha Panditharatna, Menaka Balendra, Natasha Balendra, Shanika & Pradeep Moraes, Nilmini Jayasinha and Vasee Nesiah.

Our Testimonials

Volunteering with the Music Project in Kurunegala has been a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. During my time with the Project I have taught English in the mornings at a local school called Lakdasa College.

Then in the afternoons I travelled to several different schools with the Music Project itself to teach English, trumpet and recorder. The children are all very eager to learn which makes them a pleasure to teach.
